Call from HR after summer internship

Recently ended a summer internship with a BB. HR has just scheduled a 15-min zoom call to inform on the conversion decision.

A few things going through my head right now:

  1. Does HR call to reject after an internship?

  2. Is a 15-min call sufficient if it's good news? Presumably expecting to run through some contract details, follow-up and what not.

Your thoughts?

Overthinking this - a call with HR and / or your staffer is customary for most banks after the summer. They'll tell you what you did well and not so well and then tell you the decision.

Try not to sweat it too much. Sometimes you can pick up hints on conversion during your last couple of weeks but if the info you've provided above is all you have it doesn't give an indication either way.

Good luck!

Insufficient information. Could go either way. if HR says:

1. "It's a very competitive talent pool this year, so it's not necessarily a reflection of your performance", tune out the HR because you didn't get the return offer (which is not a damn end of the world at all)

2. "You were top percent of performer this summer and the team has positive things to say about you", tune out the HR as well until they talk numbers

Wouldn’t think anything about it. Unless the other interns have calls scheduled with the staffer instead, a call with HR doesn’t mean anything. If other interns don’t have a call scheduled with HR though, I would expect the worst and hope for the best.

You probably won’t need more than 5 minutes regardless of the news. You’re an intern joining a BB, the contract is probably non-negotiable. Only thing to negotiate is how many days you get to respond. If you want to look around for a different FT offer, I would go into the call with a story for why you need time to respond.

Thanks guys, to update, I didn't get the offer.

I thought it's a call with the HR only. To my surprise, my manager was also there as well though he mentioned he could have just gotten the HR to deliver the news.

Good appraisal for work performance but reason for not getting is cultural fit. To be specific, it's a private banking associate role (post MBA) which requires us to run our books from day 1, and admittedly I'm less of a 'relationship' guy than a 'transaction' guy. My manager suggested I look at IB, PE, ER roles instead which will be a better fit for me and he will be available should I want to pick his brain for career advice.
