Data Visualization Certifications

Which of the business analytics/ visualization certifications should I peruse? I have a little experience with Tableau, SAS, Power BI, etc. but - from your guys' experience - does the AM industry favor one over the other?

Looking forward to some feedback on this.

Don’t think most AM shops will give a shit, considering the sheer amount of poorly done excel charts I’ve seen in the industry.

Your work is a reflection of your capabilities, so providing quality, easy to interpret graphics goes a long way regardless of what you use (provided they can be implemented in presentations or docs).

IMO most important thing everyone skips is actually understanding what makes a visualization good or bad, I recommend reading “Data Visualization” by Kieran Healy, it’s free online. Also, Python and R provide flexible, high quality charting libraries for pretty much any concept you could imagine, so I’d recommend learning one of those languages if you have the time or programming background

Going to disagree with what was said above. There's a huge amount of work within AM for business analysts/data visualization, although a lot of it is not investment facing. A few examples of projects I've seen / been involved with included visualizing: Inflows/Outflows for a sales team, ESG characteristics of a portfolio for an investment team and a variety of market data for investment decision makers.

The impression I get is that the extent to which these technologies are being used within AM varies a lot between firm and team. From my perspective, Tableau and PowerBI are the two most prevalent technologies (choice usually depends on how much of a MSFT shop you are). SAS is absolute garbage and will die a slow death, as it should.

If you're going to do a qualification, I would side with Tableau, not because it's necessarily better than Power BI, but more because the Microsoft training courses I've done were pretty mediocre.

RE: Python, as someone that works in it almost every day, there are some very clear limits to what you can do without getting into more complex front-end/dashboard development (e.g. Plotly) which are going to be beyond the capabilities of many, if not most analysts in finance that work in Python. Although it's great for generating charts and analyzing time series data, whenever you need to refresh a report for end users that is powered by a relational database, PowerBI/Tableau is going to be a better choice.
