Finance vs Tech: Where should this former trader and current CFA go?

Which industry has a better outlook? PWM or FinTech? One is beginning to automate the other....

Used to be a trader. Got laid off after 8 years. Finished CFA. Joined a fintech startup on a whim. Learning coding...cool. Work with data scientists....cool. Actively automating the industry I used to work in....cool. Not getting quite the ROI desired from the YEARS of CFA studying....not cool.

Can only straddle the fintech fence for so long. What's a guy to do? Jump back into investments as an analyst, trader, or PWM advisor? Or go deeper down the rabbit hole into technology, which seems to have more career upside.

Really curious to see what current financiers have to say. Or hopefully those who have been faced with this decision before.
