Global Investment Opportunities at JPM

Hey WSO Fellows, does any of you know about the Global Investment Opportunities Group at JP Morgan and what they do exactly? I can't seem to find anything about them besides that WSO post in 2010. If anyone has any insight about this group, feel free to let me know ASAP. Thanks!

Hi, GIO is a subdivision within the Private Bank that focuses on implementing tactical trade ideas for large UHNW clients - think equities, fixed income, derivatives, etc. Focuses on brokerage idea generation. They are NOT a trading desk, but rather, if a private banker at JPM has a huge institutional or individual client whom they think would be catered best by GIO, GIO takes on the investment portion of the relationship (helping the client to determine what to invest in).

TLDR - GIO is a subset of the Private Bank focused on brokerage trade idea generation for the largest clients in JPM PB.

Hi there, thank you so much for the insights! I'd be interviewing with this group soon and want to prepare as much as possible. I've been interviewing with a few ER shops already, do you think those experience will apply to this group as well or is it more client-focused? Thanks!

Yes, it should be applicable. Congrats on getting the interview!

The role is client-focused, because it is after all, a private banking role but strictly focused on investments and for the biggest PB clients. However, you do need to have a decent amount of technical knowledge, but it is unlike being a trader or strategist in Investment Solutions/Wealth Management Solutions.

Being in GIO for a full-time role eventually may pigeonhole you to just other private banking/WM careers. If you’re truly passionate about ER or trading markets, traditional S&T and ER would probably be a better fit for you.
