GSAM —> Equity research?
What are the exit opportunities like after spending 2 or 3 years in asset management? There seems to be a lot of negativity on here about GSAM exit opps. I am specifically interested in equity research. Thoughts?

Oh, I am confused - I would think GSAM is the exit op for equity research, but you are in back office or something?
Dude nobody cares if it’s a BB or GS, nobody wants to do AM at a Bank. Jump to an institutional player ASAP!
This is a horrible take. Have a hard time believing you are in the industry when there are many groups out there in the AM section of banks that happen to be top players in their respective asset class. There are absolutely structural and cultural nuances when comparing them to a pure play AM shop, but there must be a focus on the asset class you want to be apart of, and thats when you can start discussing groups, not the name of your employer. Even with that being said, being a junior at any group in GSAM sounds great simply off of the fact that base has been matched with ibankers. To say nobody wants to be at a JPIM or GSAM is ludicrous
From time when you are talking about “because pay matches IB” means you want to work there let’s me know where your priorities lie. You won’t get the wealth of experience and exposure at a Bank compared to an institutional Asset Manager like that is a fact. Pay at the earlier years is irrelevant when you can be at an insti shop for 10+ years become a Fund Manager and be clearing 1m easy based on tenure. I’m not going to argue with you but if you seriously think doing AM at a Bank is the same as at an insti shop then you really need to do some soul searching dude.
I think the person who immediately disregards an entire set of firms as a response to a post that has nothing to do with that is the one who needs to do some soul searching. I mention the base salary because it is absolutely a driver, a very large one, in what roles people choose to pursue. To ignore that GSAM is offering 110k as base for ALL asset classes right out of UG is irresponsible when considering the larger pool of candidates.
I will also point out that I do not work at a bank AM, however there is a BB that is a top player in my asset class and I had a friend of mine from my banking days lateral to the AM division after our analyst years, even with an offer from a large AM. I genuinely have a hard time believing you are on the PM track, let alone in the industry, if you are making comments such as no one wants to be at a bank AM. You sound more like an insecure student. Institutional money is institutional money.
Why don’t people like working in AM at the banks?
