What are the Exit Options in Asset Management/Value Creation for a vice president ?

Context - Currently a VP1 working in a bank's Infra sector coverage group, mostly originating/executing M&A transactions but helping out on ECM/DCM transactions as and when needed.

A headhunter asked if I'm interested to go to a large infra fund to do asset management. Seems like it's more valuation creation for the Portcos across various strategies.

Any thoughts? I don't know anyone in the field. Main questions around what is the job scope, long-term career plan, compensation (doesn't need to be high) and the demand for such value creation guys at funds, especially in Infra.

Frankly haven't really considered it, not sure of the compensation and long term career road map so will appreciate any thoughts.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about transitioning into Asset Management/Value Creation roles at large infrastructure funds as a VP:

Job Scope

  • Value Creation Focus: The role typically involves working closely with portfolio companies (Portcos) to enhance their operational and financial performance. This could include:
    • Driving operational improvements.
    • Implementing strategic initiatives.
    • Supporting growth strategies like bolt-on acquisitions or market expansion.
    • Overseeing financial performance and ensuring alignment with fund objectives.
  • Hands-On Involvement: Unlike M&A, where the focus ends at deal execution, value creation roles require ongoing involvement with the Portcos to ensure the success of the investment.

Long-Term Career Plan

  • Career Progression: These roles can lead to senior positions within the fund, such as Head of Asset Management or Operating Partner. Alternatively, they can open doors to C-suite roles (e.g., CFO, COO) at portfolio companies or other corporates.
  • Skill Development: You’ll gain expertise in operational strategy, financial oversight, and stakeholder management, which are highly transferable skills.
  • Demand: There is growing demand for professionals with strong financial and operational expertise, especially in infrastructure funds, as they focus on maximizing returns through active management.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: Typically competitive with VP-level roles in banking, though slightly lower in some cases.
  • Bonus: Performance-based bonuses are common, tied to the success of the portfolio companies.
  • Carry: Many funds offer carried interest, which can significantly enhance long-term compensation if the fund performs well.

Demand for Value Creation Professionals in Infra

  • High Demand: Infrastructure funds are increasingly focusing on value creation as a key driver of returns, especially in a competitive market. Professionals with a blend of financial and operational expertise are highly sought after.
  • Specialized Skill Set: Your background in M&A and exposure to ECM/DCM transactions positions you well for this transition, as it demonstrates a strong understanding of deal execution and financial structuring.

Considerations

  • Cultural Shift: Moving from banking to a fund environment often involves a shift in work culture, with a greater emphasis on long-term strategic thinking rather than transaction-driven work.
  • Lifestyle: Asset management roles may offer better work-life balance compared to banking, though this can vary depending on the fund and its portfolio.

If you’re intrigued by the opportunity to work on the operational side of investments and build long-term value, this could be a rewarding career move. However, it’s essential to assess the specific fund’s culture, compensation structure, and long-term growth opportunities before making a decision.
