Hello, I'm rising junior at target school.

My goal is to get into investment companies, such as Black Rock and Vanguard, and to become a fund manager.

However, I don't know where to start my career with. I feel so lost right now, and I want to get some advice from professionals.

Thank you-

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can take to start your career in investment companies like BlackRock and Vanguard:

  1. Networking and Cold Emailing:

    • Start by networking with professionals in the industry. Attend events, join relevant clubs, and connect with alumni from your school who are working in investment management.
    • Cold emailing can also be effective. Reach out to professionals on LinkedIn or through your school's alumni network. Be concise and clear about your goals and how you can add value.
  2. Internships:

    • Apply for internships at investment firms. Even if you don't land a position at BlackRock or Vanguard right away, gaining experience at smaller firms or in related roles can be valuable.
    • Look for summer analyst programs or internships at equity research firms, asset management companies, or even boutique investment firms.
  3. Certifications:

    • Consider pursuing certifications like the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst). While not always a prerequisite, having a CFA can significantly boost your credentials and make you more attractive to top firms.
  4. Skill Development:

    • Focus on developing relevant skills such as financial modeling, valuation, and understanding of financial markets. There are many online courses and resources available to help you build these skills.
  5. Resume and Application:

    • Tailor your resume to highlight relevant experiences, skills, and achievements. Use templates and guides available on WSO to ensure your resume stands out.
    • Prepare thoroughly for interviews by practicing common questions and understanding the specific requirements of the roles you are applying for.
  6. Persistence and Patience:

    • Breaking into top investment firms can be challenging, but persistence is key. Keep applying, networking, and improving your skills.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of starting a successful career in investment management and eventually becoming a fund manager at a prestigious firm like BlackRock or Vanguard. Good luck!
