How relevant is this internship?

Hi all, I'm a sophomore and so far my recruiting for internships this summer doesn't look very bright as I have a mediocre (3.26) gpa at a semi-target. It seems that I may have an opportunity through a family friend at Hyundai Securities in Seoul this summer in a s&t or equity research type role. How relevant does this experience appear for recruiting next year as my ultimate goal is PM at a hedge or mutual fund? And also, although the name is pretty recognizable will it not be taken as seriously because it's outside the US? Thank you in advance.

With my knowledge, Hyundai Securities does very little business outside of korea...therefore the work u do will be focused mainly on SK's domestic market. if your ultimate goal is to become a PM, i recommened you interning at Equity Research than s&t. Starting out as an ER seems to be the most common way to break into Mutual Fund positions..(dunno about Hedgefunds) Ask them polietly to put you in a group that covers global markets, rather than a local KOSPI/KOSDAQ market.

However, just heads up, I heard from trusted sources that rather than hiring sell-side ER analysts to come work for them, most AM firms in Korea these days hire graduates fresh out of college and train them in-house for 3~4 years to manage their portfolios. Seems to be the industry trends nowadays.

And I must tell you, you probably will not do anything meaningful during your internship in korea. (especially in local firms.) You will probably end up doing lots of translation work for them.

And yes, unfortunately, it will not be taken as seriously when you apply for FT postions when you are back in the States because you are competiting against hundreds of other kids who've already interned in their junior summer at a BB in NY,London,HK, etc.. But it's still better than nothing, and it will look good if you ever want to cover asia/pacific market later in the future. Good luck
