how to asset management make money?

Hi guys, got a couple of questions for you.

  1. How do asset management firms actually make their money? (Other from the fees they charge, ) what strategies do they utilize to grow returns for their portfolio?
  2. Do the BBs or most well established investment firms/banks all use the same set of strategies or would these strategies differ widely depending on the institutions?
  3. how do you break into the industry? what entry level positions are there?!

Patrick,

Have you considered making the Search box larger? I don't think it's being used as much as it should be lately haha.

halfstep,

There is literally dozens of threads on this and other information, not to mention the FAQ section that the WSO team has worked on for someone such as yourself. Your time will be spent much more efficiently searching and reading the boards my friend, especially if your queries are of this basic nature. You'll have answers to your 3 questions in 15 minutes, I promise. You can always make use of Google, Investopedia, mergersandacquisitions.com and like 290452 other resources.

If someone comes along and writes a more thorough response, don't forget to throw them a Silver Banana. Look out for Q&A threads with current working professionals as well, they are a rich source of information.
