How to get a Broker Dealer License?

Serious question.

Founder of a fintech startup here. I've raised money, but don't know how to get a broker dealer license. Does anyone know how to, or can connect me to someone who knows how to obtain one?

I've taken a look at the FINRA and SEC regulations around this, but am a bit confused.

Happy to connect or buy one food/coffee/whatever they want.

While I'm serious about this, do i look absolutely stupid to the avg finance person

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the steps and key points to consider for obtaining a broker-dealer license:

  1. Understand FINRA and SEC Requirements:

    • FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) is the governing body for broker-dealer licenses.
    • You need to comply with both FINRA and SEC regulations.
  2. Series 7 Exam:

    • The Series 7 exam is essential for becoming a General Securities Representative.
    • It allows you to interact with clients and sell most securities, except for life insurance, real estate, commodities, and futures.
    • The exam is 6 hours long, divided into two 3-hour sections.
  3. Sponsorship:

    • To take the Series 7 exam, you need to be sponsored by a FINRA-registered firm.
    • This sponsorship is typically obtained within the first three months of employment at a firm.
  4. State Registrations:

    • Passing the Series 7 alone is not sufficient; you also need state registrations.
    • These registrations vary by state and are necessary to legally operate as a broker-dealer.
  5. Alternative Options:

    • If you do not want to work for another firm, consider hiring someone who already has the necessary licenses and experience.
    • This person can manage the broker-dealer functions while you focus on other aspects of the business.
  6. Forming Your Own Firm:

    • You can start your own firm and then hire licensed professionals to meet regulatory requirements.
    • This approach allows you to maintain control over your business while ensuring compliance.
  7. Consulting Professionals:

    • Given the complexity of the regulations, it might be beneficial to consult with legal and financial professionals who specialize in FINRA and SEC compliance.

For more detailed guidance, you might want to connect with professionals on platforms like Wall Street Oasis or seek out specialized legal and financial advisors who can provide tailored advice for your specific situation.
