Morningstar/MBA to long/short buy-side
With a couple of years as an equity analyst at Morningstar and then a Top 5 MBA, how easy would it be to transition to a mutual fund or long-oriented hedge fund role? How bad is Morningstar's reputation in comparison to BBs/brokerage research houses? Thanks.
Wdym? You know Morningstar is decent. Combine that with a T5 MBA
Doable assuming H/S/W/CBS/Booth and that you’re putting in the work to get in front of people with your ideas
I am a career switcher (not an impressive pre-MBA job for buy side) and wound up at a large LO from one of the above schools. You should get at least the same or better looks than me, and if you work hard it’s totally doable.
It gets significantly harder if you are not at those programs
Why have we seen several posts asking about whether Morningstar is good enough? What's Morningstar's rep on the Street
Idk, this is the first I’ve seen. Don’t think people are “wowed” by them but it’s not like their rep is bad. Equity research anywhere is better experience than I had and I still managed to land a good buy side offer.
Haha, cool
I feel like 'equity research' is immensely broad enough that it can span from BB (GS, JPM, MS) research to a frickin 3-man sketchy research shop tho. Maybe this might not be the case in the US, but in Asia especially it's bad. Unlike IB or PE where there's always some sort of floor to the quality of the firm
