Msc EDHEC BS to break into AM ( bonds )
Hello everyone, I am a French student at a French university and am currently finishing my degree at a university that is not particularly well-regarded in finance. I was wondering if going to EDHEC to do an MSc would boost my chances of working in asset management (bonds, but I am open to other opportunities). I had a few ideas for boosting my chances (CFA, etc.), but I would like to know if this investment is really worth it.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, EDHEC Business School is generally considered a strong option for finance in Europe, particularly for asset management. However, it is ranked below top-tier schools like HEC, ESSEC, and ESCP. If your goal is to break into asset management, especially in bonds, here are some key considerations:
EDHEC's Reputation in Finance: While EDHEC is well-regarded, it is not at the same level as HEC or ESSEC for finance. That said, it has a solid reputation in asset management and finance-related fields, which could help you land interviews, especially in Europe.
CFA Certification: Pursuing the CFA designation alongside your MSc could significantly boost your profile. The CFA is highly respected in asset management and demonstrates your commitment to the field, particularly in fixed income (bonds).
Networking and Internships: EDHEC has a strong alumni network in finance, and leveraging this network through internships and coffee chats can be crucial. Internships in asset management or related fields will be key to breaking into the industry.
Alternative Options: If you have the opportunity to attend a higher-ranked program (e.g., HEC, ESSEC, or even LSE), it might be worth considering, as these schools have stronger placement records in top-tier asset management firms.
Regional Focus: EDHEC's strength is more pronounced in Europe, so if you are targeting European asset management firms, it could be a good fit. However, for global opportunities, a higher-ranked program might provide better leverage.
In summary, pursuing an MSc at EDHEC can boost your chances of breaking into asset management, especially if you complement it with the CFA and relevant internships. However, if you have access to a higher-ranked program, it might be worth exploring that option for better opportunities.
