Need Advice - Junior in College, Non-Target, no-internships

Hi everyone,

I need some advice for how to proceed.

My background: I am a junior at a non-target in the NYC metro area. It is relatively well-known in the region for what it is worth. I am a Statistics major, with a 3.3 GPA. I know I have a low GPA and no relevant internships, but I haven't spent my 3 years in college messing around. I have a had a few issues with my family and I currently have to take care of my younger siblings, work 25-35 hours weekly, and have a few leadership positions on campus.

I have applied everywhere in the Asset Management industry but have not heard back at all, not even for a first round. I know the usual advice is to network, and I have. A few people have even offered to push my resume without me asking, but have gone cold when they found out my GPA/lack of work experience.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What can I do to make myself standout? I have been self-studying and am very confident in my technical abilities; I just really need that first job.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

I'm not an expert, but you may want to pivot at this point. You can network and try for smaller firms, but the 2 things that seem to be the most important (Grades and Experience) are the 2 things you lack. Being a stats major, you have skills, but on paper you probably just don't seem impressive. Maybe expand your search to somethign else?

Thank you for your reply. What do you think I can pivot to? Most of my extracurriculars and all of my electives in college are finance-related and it feels like I don't have the grades for a career in finance but also lack the relevant experience for a career in anything statistics related. I wanted the statistics degree for something within finance.
