Path to CEO - from Investment or from Sales role?

What do you think the fastest route to become a CEO in an AM? The investment role (analyst-PM-CIO-CEO), or the sales role (CRM-head sales-CMO-CEO)? In my country most of the CEO was a top sales in respective AM. Dunno about the other country.
