Product Management within Asset Management - FO or MO?

Hi, currently being considered for a product management grad role, which would include product development, product strategy, etc... The firm is Allianz Global Investors (~$600bn AUM).

It would be really useful if someone could please shed some light on the following:
1) is product management generally regarded as Front Office or Middle Office?
2) How much modelling could I expect to be doing?
3) What do exits typically look like? I am particularly interested in ER at L/S HFs but also Long-only AMs.

Many thanks guys.

1) Middle Office

2) 0% financial statement modelling

3) This role doesn't expose you to direct investing outside of interacting with the portfolio managers and their investment team. The role is more business-oriented, coming up with new products for clients and implementing them into the fund line-up. Exits are product roles, institutional investment consulting, PWM, and client relationship. Depending how you use the opportunity, you could also break into more portfolio construction, asset allocation types of roles with the CFA designation.

Overall, not particularly useful for ER. You'd need to teach yourself modelling, create your own stock pitches, network your ass off in an already declining segment of the industry, and pursue an MBA/CFA to get a shot. The role is 40 - 50 hours a week, so you'll have plenty of time to do the above and explore other areas of the industry.
