Often mutual funds but not necessarily-could also be managed accounts, etc. Client interaction totally depends on your job. An analyst at a large mutual fund company isn't going to be talking to investors regularly whereas our marketing guy does nothing but talk to investors. Large retail asset managers can also have various distribution channels (brokers, financial advisors, etc) who deal with directly with clients. Retail generally means that your clients won't be institutions.

hmm large mutual fund arent really that much into retail. I work for one of the biggest one and >50% of the AUM is institutional. I might have misunderstood your question though
