Struggling to find a full-time offer/losing hope

Hello everyone!

I am about to graduate with a masters degree in Europe and I am struggling to get a full-time offer as an analyst in portfolio management - equities. I already have some experience in equity research and have been trying to network and break into PM.

Looking for advice as to what I should do or how I should approach the next few months till I don't land something.

Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps you can take to improve your chances of landing a full-time offer in portfolio management:

  1. Build and Refine Your Portfolio:

    • Create a comprehensive portfolio showcasing your equity research and any relevant projects.
    • Consider hiring a professional from platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to review and enhance your portfolio.
  2. Informational Interviews:

    • Get really good at conducting informational interviews. The book "2-Hour Job Search" can be a valuable resource for this.
    • Be selective with whom you reach out to, focusing on individuals and companies that align with your career goals.
  3. Networking:

    • Continue to network actively. Make sure to follow up with your contacts every few months to keep the relationships warm.
    • Use platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed.com to set up job alerts and save searches for relevant roles.
  4. Perfect Your Interview Skills:

    • Practice your interview skills, focusing on your ability to sell your intelligence and experience.
    • Prepare materials on several investment ideas to pitch during interviews. Ensure your pitches are tight, succinct, and have an edge.
  5. Consider Alternative Roles:

    • Look into related fields such as tech, management consulting, or accounting, which may have later recruitment cycles.
    • Research family offices and private wealth management practices in your city. These smaller firms often have less structured recruitment processes and may offer internships or entry-level positions.
  6. Stay Positive and Persistent:

    • Maintain a positive outlook and keep pushing every single day. Budget your lifestyle to accommodate a potentially extended job search period.
    • Engage in hobbies and activities that help you stay sane and balanced during this challenging time.

By following these steps, you can enhance your job search strategy and increase your chances of landing a full-time offer in portfolio management. Good luck!
