Terrible First Company in Industry Experience
I had a terrible experience at a firm--that I will not name--as my first job in the industry. In short, I walked off the job because I was underpaid (under market) for the work I was doing and that pay did not justify the sexual harassment and rafts of shit I got every day (the company had lots of creepy closet cases and I am a good-looking, at least for the company, young man--I don't care what you're sexuality is and that your wife isn't around, I don't think work is the time/place to ask for hand jobs from male interns). I felt pressure to join a back office group I hated that frankly was uneducated, ghetto, poorly dressed, and unprofessional, and beneath me skills and background-wise. In another area of the company, front office, I worked with some well-educated competent individuals, but who also were at times extremely condescending, dysfunctional people. The environment was constant backstabbing and sabotage and shit-talking, such that I didn't feel comfortable asking anyone for any type of reference. Shit, I even saw a drug deal go down. Whenever I had heard of anyone who had left or who had tried to, it was always in a terrible light. This being said, there are some good people there I am sure, but on the whole, it seemed like a cheap organization and frankly overhyped. There are some truly dark characters that I feel would act maliciously if contacted about me, particularly handjob creep--should I just give up on the industry? My education is non-target and has terrible connections, and I fear blacklisting just seals my coffin.
