Typical SA hours
Hi everybody,
I am going to be interning at a BB in AM/WM this summer and was wondering what the typical hours are like. I live in Queens when I am not at University so I am contemplating if it is worth it or not to get a place in the city
I'd say it varies pretty significantly from firm to firm and department to department in AM. (WM is a completely different animal, and I have no insight there. Is this AM or WM?) Our interns were working pretty close to 9-5. There may have been some exceptions where they stayed late for a project, but it would be abnormal.
If you think of it from an employer/mentor situation, it makes some sense. Our interns are hourly, so you don't want to pay more if you don't have to, and for most projects they needed to have their hands held and be coached. If I'm getting in early or working late it's because I've got a deadline looming. The last thing I want is to be slowed down by having to explain everything that I'm doing to you.
Essentially, this is a long-winded way of saying "save some money and live at home." This is especially good advice given the cost of even a shoebox in the city. I mean, how bad can the commute be? Even if you're way out in College Point/Whitestone or Breezy Point it's under 2 hours to anywhere in Manhattan
In a somewhat similar situation to OP, I'm going to be an AM intern at a BB in midtown and getting paid hourly. What do you think about subletting a place in Hoboken/JC? Worried about the commute when I don't really know my hours. There's University housing near the office but crazy $$$$
You do know that the PATH runs every 4 minutes during rush hour, and your biggest concern will be shoving your way onto the train, right? Late nights the absolute worst miss of the the JSQ connection to Newark involves an hour on the PATH. If you're taking ppl home, as did the last time I flagged a cab for a threesome, anywhere in NYC to anywhere off the PATH is under $100.
I remember seeing another thread that talked about BB-AM interns working 12-14 hour days on average. Seems really high to me - anyone know if this is true?
Go on here and look at Life at a Top Asset Management or the AM thread and look up top threads there. They speak to the lifestyle at a AM firm.
I feel like the lifestyle is probably a little bit different though bc OP is talking about AM at a BB
