Why does it take so long for some firms to send a rejection email

Been about 6 months since I sent my application to BlackRock for a placement year, I know I've been rejected but why do they and other firms take so long to notify candidates, I would rather get rejected immediately than have to wait endless months in anticipation.

You are in their "maybe" pile. It's a free option for them to keep your profile around in case another candidate they did offer a place to drops out, or for whatever other reason they can't fill their class. From their point of view, however much you might like them to, there's no reason whatsoever to decline a "maybe" (and frankly there's no downside for you other than controlling your emotions / behaviour - until you have an offer, assume every application is a rejection and act accordingly)
