WM to IB?
Does this path exist? Has anyone started in WM and moved into IB, PE, etc? Looking for alternatives to the advisor route from a current client service associate.

Career Resources
Actively in pursuit of this and am knocking on the door (with the guidance of some apes here). I went PWM —> MScF —> Senior Fin Analyst at public co —> promoted to CD Assoc —> now am active in 3 IB processes, all MM. it can be done.
Similar to the above, I went PWM -> MBA -> PE Internship -> Consulting -> Corp Dev. I got an offer in banking as well but liked the work life balance CD offered. For me the MBA was the pivot I needed to get out of the PWM pigeon hole.
The reason you don’t see many of that is that comp in WM is solid and the hours are not nearly as bad as IB (also less mentally stimulating)
Curious if anyone has any insight on going the opposite direction (ie IB to WM)
Yes - very doable, but there are a lot of variables here.
Know quite a few people who did this at GS - PWM for a bit then IB, both internally lateral to GS IBD or to external shops.
Understand that there is a huge difference between GS PWM and mom-and-pop PWM, timing / market conditions is a huge factor as well (right now is a very difficult time for IB, honestly I've seen more people go IB -> PWM).
Happy to answer any questions here.
