Big 4 Consulting Office Transfer
Beginning my B4 consulting career this upcoming July in a Silicon Valley based practice. I am from NY and know that I want to transfer offices fairly quickly after starting. I have heard timelines ranging from 8-12 months before making the move.
Just wanted to hear about anyone's experiences doing this, and if there are anythings I should put in motion early on to assure a smooth transfer.
Additionally, if anyone has done this-- What was the transition like post transfer? Was joining a new office in any way a hindrance on your progression etc? Or was it a smooth move?
Alot will depend on what practice you are in, some are easier than others.
Also, your project will play a role. If you are on a long term thing in SV it may be more difficult than if you are doing 2 months stints here and there.
I'm based in Technology, so I'd think there is demand in either location for that type of work. In regards to timeline, do you have any insights?
The fact that you were hired into the SV office and are based in Tech means a great deal. Many people try to get into the SV offices and don't. If you want to stay in tech, it might be a bad look to transfer. If you want to transfer because of the commute from NY to CA, then you need to reconsider consulting...
The reason surrounding a transfer would be the fact I am from NY, and plan on attending a NY based MBA program should my gmat scores allow me to do so. I was originally referred to that office location and was offered others due to summer associate return offers taking up the associate class spots for my recruiting year.
The commute would honestly be no problem to me should I be based in NY, its simply a preference thing regarding "home office" i suppose.

Question for those of you in Big 4. I'm currently a Senior in an office on the East Coast, and looking to make my way out West. I don't want to be in public for more than another year, and am looking to transition into an fp&a role. I've been applying to positions with companies in the city I'm looking to move to, but no bites so far. I've talked with a recruiter, and it seems that the fact that I'm not actually in that city could be holding me back. I'm not in a position to move without having a job lined up, so I've been giving some consideration to transferring within my firm. My plan would be to make the move, and as soon as I'm there, look for positions with some local companies, which, if all goes as planned, would mean I'm leaving my firm shortly after making the transfer. Wondering how this would be viewed/could affect my career, and wanted to get some thoughts. Any advice is appreciated.
I wouldn't think twice about doing this. Probably not viewed awesomely by the people at your new office but you have to do you.
I did this with a big 4 firm. Moved from a large market to a smaller market then left after a year. They should not care at all because there is not cost to the firm. They don't give you any moving expenses if you are transferring offices simply to move somewhere else.
