Chances for Low GPA HYP new grad in MBB

Class of 2026 from HYP in computer science / mathematics discipline. 2 prior swe internships at FAANG and incoming swe internship at another FAANG. I have always wanted to pivot into consulting each summer but always got auto rejected because of low gpa (and possibly bc i didn’t network). With fears of H1B and AI stuff, I am seriously trying to move into MBB new grad and will do whatever it takes. Main issue is my gpa. I have a 3.2. My sophomore year I had multiple family member deaths and it ruined me mentally (and I failed a class due to lack of attendance). Is there any way at all that I could get past resume screening despite this gpa (due to my major + 3x faang internships) for new grad? Or do I just accept the fact that I might have to stick in SWE despite the fears (and I’m sure mbb has fears too but barrier to entry is a lot higher / more exclusive) If i do have a chance, what i explicitly do to get past screening? Everyone says network but what do you specifically advise that I should do please.

Prior swe with a 3.2 from a top school

first of all I think you’re a shoe in for MBB , and that is a good career pick

but if it doesn’t work out for you then my advice would be to go really deep on something; kernel architecture, cloud fault recovery, cyber for OT platforms.

in 1-2 years time you can get any an1 consulting or banking job and will have a cool story to tell

MBB doesn't really care about work experience. Also, FAANG SWE isn't really that hard to get. I have the exact same background as you (FAANG SWE, HYP CS, except I had a 3.97 GPA) and got into MBB with tooth and nail (got rejected each summer, but got in new grad). I had to downplay my tech background (as if I was just "exploring for fun" and messing around over the summers rather than seriously considering SWE) to really stand out, rather than articulate it as a pivot. Anything else and it would be seen as a negative, in my opinion. Your only options is to network extremely hard and find a partner in a tech-focused office who values your tech background and vouch for you, or just stay in SWE, pivot to PM and then MBB or get an MBA.

The work felt narrow in scope and mind-numbing. Didn't feel inspired around colleagues; no sense of ambition, everyone just wanted to coast/WFH (given the fat pay checks they were collecting I don't blame them). At both the unicorn startups and FAANG, I found this to be the case. You're either on a product team doing full-stack work that will be automated by AI, or on an infrastructure team doing extremely narrow and hyper specific technical tasks that aren't generalizable from company to company. It's great if you enjoy debugging or solving these infra programs but I didn't enjoy it. Career progression also isn't great as a SWE.

MBB def cares about work experience. They evaluate across multiple metrics: 1. Academics, 2. Extracirriculars, 3. Work experience.
I have good friends on recruiting team, got interviews and offers at multiple MBB firms

Just go to faang lol. I’m curious- what do you think you gain from pre mba consulting that is so important for you to not just go to faang for a few years then get an mba?

op probably wants to be able to consider the exit ops that dont recruit at post mba level. or maybe exit opps that require 4+ years in consulting, where starting out of undergrad helps a lot.

Why go from big tech -> mba

Post mba comp is lower at that point, your expected tenure is 3 years and then you're back at the same company but this time in a cost center role
