Corp Strat: LT Trajectory / External Mobility without MBA?

I currently am deciding between two paths:

  1. BB Non-IB (e.g., S&T, etc.) > Corp Strat at @ BB > (?)

2. BB Non-IB > Corp Strat > M7 (non-HSW) > MBB > (?)

I still don't know what type of company I want to work at longer term (F100 vs. F1000 vs. large tech company vs. startup), though I will probably stay within broader fin services world (banking, payments, fintech, etc.). A lot of people in corp strat at my bank join at manager level with MBA + consulting experience. At startups, the majority of mid-level openings for bizops, strategy & operations, and strategic finance roles ask for either IB, consulting, or startup / tech experience. The corp strat role is more generalist than product-specific, though most people tend to lateral over into one of the business units.

It seems like choosing path #1 would offer a slightly accelerated path to manager at the bank (1-3 more years). Manager is what EMs from Mck come in at, and TC is probably ~$175-200k. However, there is limited visibility on promotions beyond that level, as it depends on timing, your role / team, and luck. Obviously, if things don't play out as I like, external mobility is an option. Two questions:

 - Would staying the course on path #1 limit my opportunity set to mostly comparable companies (large banks)?

 - Does it make sense to get the consulting credentials, expand professional network, and gain perspective on the type of role I want with path #2? Or is the opportunity cost of leaving the trajectory in my current role too high? (excluding the near term $$ cost)

Would appreciate any thoughts - thanks!
