Econ consulting vs Accenture strategy offers

Junior at a T10 school with internship offers from a top econ consulting firm (AG/NERA/Cornerstone) and Accenture strategy. Same city, basically same pay.

Have always been interested in business/strategy and wanted to do management consulting for a few years at least, but potentially stay much longer if I really like it, then exit into corporate strategy, maybe even product or PE/VC. Open to doing a MBA.

Accenture

If I had an offer from a different consulting firm like EY-P, LEK, I would take it no question, but really having a lot of doubt bc of Accenture’s rep. -layoffs, AI thing, having to network yourself onto projects, strategy projects not really being pure strategy, the massive size of the firm, apparently not a lot of interns got return offers last year, people I’ve talked to not speaking super positively about their experience like I feel like they do everywhere else.

Econ consulting

  • I applied to econ consulting firms honestly bc I’m an econ major at a great school and have a bit of research experience, and somehow got an offer. Not interested in law or econ PhD at all. My concern is that econ consulting would pigeon hole me, and I would have to get an MBA to do anything business related that I mentioned above (which just takes extra time/money esp without company sponsorship). I guess I could lateral into data-related things without an MBA but that doesn’t sound as interesting.
  • But…. I had my final round in person, then visited the office again after getting the offer, and through the process I’ve talked to at least like 12 people, and I know they have really great culture. They are also the best in the industry at what they do, and I feel like I would learn a lot. I just don’t know if the academic culture is my vibe.

Strategy consulting is what I originally really wanted to do, but the econ consulting offer just seems too good to pass up. With either internship I definitely plan to re-recruit for MBB (interviewed for 2/3 this year), but obviously very competitive and need to make a choice anticipating I would be working where I choose full time. Would really appreciate any advice, especially if anyone could shed light on Accenture!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your situation:

Accenture Strategy

  • Pros:

    • Offers exposure to business/strategy work, aligning with your long-term interest in management consulting and corporate strategy.
    • Potential exits into corporate strategy, product roles, or even PE/VC are possible, though not as common as from MBB or top-tier firms.
    • Accenture Strategy has strong functional practices like CFO&EV and Customer Insights and Growth Strategy, as well as high-performing industry practices in CMT, Retail, and Consumer Goods & Services.
    • If you plan to pursue an MBA, Accenture Strategy can provide a solid foundation for business school applications.
  • Cons:

    • Concerns about Accenture’s reputation are valid. Issues like layoffs, networking for projects, and the perception that "strategy" projects may not always be pure strategy work are common critiques.
    • The massive size of the firm can make it feel less personal, and the experience can vary significantly depending on the projects and teams you land on.
    • Reports of interns not receiving return offers last year could indicate instability or a competitive internal environment.

Econ Consulting (AG/NERA/Cornerstone)

  • Pros:

    • These firms are leaders in their field, and you’d gain deep expertise in economic analysis, which is highly respected.
    • The culture seems to be a strong positive, with a collaborative and supportive environment.
    • You’d develop strong analytical and quantitative skills, which could be valuable for later transitions into data-related roles or even corporate strategy.
    • If you decide to pursue an MBA, the experience at a top econ consulting firm would still be a strong asset.
  • Cons:

    • Econ consulting can feel more academic and research-oriented, which might not align with your interest in business/strategy.
    • It could pigeonhole you into a niche, making it harder to transition into broader business roles without an MBA.
    • Exits into corporate strategy, product, or PE/VC are less common compared to strategy consulting.

Key Considerations

  1. Long-Term Goals: If your ultimate goal is to work in corporate strategy, product, or PE/VC, Accenture Strategy might provide a more direct path. However, if you’re open to pursuing an MBA, either option could work, as both provide strong foundations for business school.

  2. Re-Recruiting for MBB: Both options keep the door open for re-recruiting at MBB. However, Accenture Strategy might align more closely with the type of work MBB firms do, which could strengthen your case during re-recruiting.

  3. Cultural Fit: The positive culture at the econ consulting firm is a significant factor. If you thrive in a collaborative and supportive environment, this could make a big difference in your overall experience.

  4. Risk Tolerance: If you’re concerned about the potential instability at Accenture (e.g., layoffs, return offers), the econ consulting firm might feel like a safer bet.

Recommendation

If strategy consulting is your passion and you’re willing to navigate the challenges at Accenture (e.g., networking for projects, potential instability), it aligns better with your long-term goals. However, if you value a strong culture and are open to pivoting later (with or without an MBA), the econ consulting offer is an excellent opportunity.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your risk tolerance and how much weight you place on culture versus alignment with your long-term goals.

Don’t know as much about Accenture, but I just finished a summer internship at one of the Econ consulting firms you mentioned and really enjoyed it. However, if you want to do business long-term without necessarily needing an MBA, I don’t see why Accenture isn’t the obvious choice. Also not sure why you think Econ consulting is “too good to pass up” — the firms you mentioned are the best in the industry, but it’s still just Econ consulting, it’s not like these are equivalent to MBB. Both good opportunities and maybe you’d have a more fun internship experience in econ consulting, but if you want to do strategy long-term, not economics, doesn’t the strategy opportunity make more sense?

yeah but ive just heard really bad things about the company overall recently, and can see how the negative things aren’t just talked about but would directly impact me

One of my friend used to intern in one of the econ consulting firm you mentioned. She do get interview invite for recruiting for MBB. I think if strategy is your top choice, I'd recommend you to take accenture

acn strat is pretty solid place to be. Lots of interesting tech work mostly, but also the typical finance / healthcare / cpg etc work. Would totally recommend over Econ consulting if  ur not sure

nah I didn't. My mentor used to work there so I heard about it a bit, but not that much. they're at m7 mba rn, pivoting to IB bc they got into personal investing finance and now really enjoys finance generally. got into tech group at top EB bc of strong background through acn, at least last I heard.

There was a thread last year about this EXACT topic (Econ consulting vs Accenture strategy.) if this is a new person, would encourage you to look at that post. Happy to talk via dm as well as I’ve done both Econ consulting and t2 strategy (not Accenture)
