Getting from Tier 3 (Deloitte) consulting to Tier 2 or 1.

I am currently an analyst at Deloitte and will begin consulting in the next year. I plan on staying for a year or 2 and then would like to lateral to a more prestigious firm. Do recruiters for Tier 1 and 2 firms look at this negatively or does the experience give me a slight edge compared to entry level candidates? Thanks for the help.

To be honest, the line of Tier 3 and Tier 2 are quite easily blurred.

I'd say the two things to keep in mind are:

(1) Mckinsey, Bain and BCG are the most sought after firms in the world within their respective practices and offerings. Regardless of your professional background or consulting experience, there will always be tough competition.

(2) The defining characteristic will not be the firm on your resume, but the impact and exposure to the work and client projects within Deloitte. I would also argue that Monitor Deloitte, the practice that deals with big strategy engagements, would be worth looking into and considering given that the client exposure within Monitor is more geared toward emulating what MBB (and other pure strategy shops) do.

On a final note, instead of worrying about exit ops before beginning the work, take some time to stand out in your role and connect with colleagues internally.
