Hey, does anyone know what a product management role at a tech firm like Google is like? The role sounds interesting in theory but is it really as exciting in reality?
Also, what is the salary progression for a product manager at a large tech firm like Google, Amazon or Facebook?
Unless you're a developer or quite senior tech roles are meh. Taking MBB would also accelerate your trajectory within Google for these kinds of roles.

PM roles in big tech (Google/FB/AMZN/MSFT) are considered a top position in tech companies and are often the next step for software engineers if they want to move into management/don't want code anymore. It's usually the feeder into upper management positions, just to name a few examples:

Google APM straight out of undergrad has a base salary around the $120k range. Some MBB consultants exit into PM roles in tech.
But to answer OP's question, from what I've heard Google APMs can work on some pretty cool internal and external products. Not your typical industry job and there's a lot of variety on projects. However, most PMs in these tech companies have a CS or engineering background, either through their major or work experience. PMs with non-technical backgrounds are less common but usually come from consulting or straight out of some top undergrad (think Ivy).
Fair points. Project Manager falls within what I was thinking of as developer. You need to be part of the core business of building new products and features. Not too familiar with specific tech terminology and titles.
From what I've heard (friends who have gone through the program), the APM program at Google is a relatively small program (at least compared to the software engineering program) that is extremely well-regarded within Google, with exit opps into a variety of different roles including early-stage venture capital, if that's what you're into.
MBB will likely provide exits into more traditional roles, like private equity, hedge funds or corporate development.
Not sure about salary progression, but I'd imagine that Google's APM program pays significantly north of MBB, at least at the entry level.

APM is orders of magnitude more difficult to get into than MBB. You'll be competing for 20-30 non-returning intern spots total. TC for year one is closer to 200k than 120k. In tech, you get equity as a substantial portion of your TC.
