MBB Transferring Offices vs. Firms

Hey everyone!

I’ve recently accepted an ACI offer with Bain in one of their main offices (non-NY). I absolutely love Bain, the people, and the office as well. However, I would like to end up in NY sooner rather than later to start my career. How feasible is it to transfer to NY within Bain after my ACI experience?

Otherwise, for optionality, how do McKinsey/BCG view applications from a Bain ACI? Does this increase chances of an interview or hurt them?

All help is greatly appreciated!

Possible but not that easy, since a lot of people go into ACI with the same mentality as you. You will need a strong reason beyond "I want to live in NYC" and frankly be a little careful with how you broach the topic. There has been some perceived entitlement among the summers (UG and MBA) now that everyone is guaranteed a return offer, and senior folks often don't often take kindly to things like that.

Can't speak to feasibility of transferring (feel like it wouldn't be too impossible), but having ACI on your resume will definitely be a helpful point for BCG/McK in terms of getting interviews. Great experience to have

Indeed, if you received an offer at the end of your internship the other firms will be keen to recruit you as well. That might be a good way to recruit into a location where you're not a strong candidate (be it due to target schools, visa requirements, ...).

Feasible generally speaking, but relatively rare in your first 6 months as an entry-level employee. Key exceptions are usually due to relationships (i.e. your partner received an offer in this city and you would follow them) or family circumstances (i.e. somebody in your family needs care and you have to be closer to them). I wouldn't advise using that card if not true, but I can think of people who used it... liberally.
