Non-Target, No Contracts, Where to Begin?

Hi all,

I'm a recent grad from a non-target and I am currently working in corporate finance at a super small company. I really dislike the work that I am currently doing and since the company is really small (almost no chance to do anything more interesting) and there are no coworkers my age, I'm really looking at jumping ship asap.

I have always been more interested in working in or with a corporation and helping them with their strategy and as a result, I've wanted to work in corporate finance (not i-banking but more for non-F500 companies in their finance department) or management consulting, but I'm really struggling to find good opportunities to launch my career.

We've tried all our family contacts, all of which have come lame, and I personally have emailed every one of my alumni that work at large companies, but unfortunately nothing has panned out even after multiple followups. Therefore, I'm kind of lost as to how I can go about networking. The main hurdles I'm facing are that:

  1. I go to a non-target, so no OCR and very few alumni at the companies I want to work at

  2. Family contacts are limited and haven't worked out, alumni contacts are limited and have not produced any results as well

  3. I do not live in a big city with a lot of F500 companies or a lot of MC boutiques, so networking/meeting industry professionals is difficult.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone on WSO has any tips on how to get around these hurdles and try to network myself into at least an interview at a decent MC or F500 company. My resume isn't a slamdunk interview for MC, but I know it's definitely strong enough for most jobs in corporate finance. Because applying online doesn't guarantee my resume gets a look, I haven't gotten any bites, so if someone has advice on what they would do if they were me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

F. Ro JoContacts aren't just inherited man... talk to people. People know people. That's networking.

I am aware of what networking is, but it's not so easy to randomly contact someone you have nothing in common (i.e. aren't alumni of your school, etc.) with and it's even harder to meet up with them when you're on the opposite side of the country. That's the biggest issue I'm having is finding people to contact and then getting them to have a face to face with me.

Why not go to your local rotary club, try and go to some charity golf tournaments (if you play), get involved in your religious organization. That is how you meet people.

you're SOL, bro.

only way is to ODAMED it if you can muster up the effort to do that. If not, try ODAMAIT. if that lead has been exhausted, try OFAIKYDINTIDODISERLYR.
