Post-MBA lateral into consulting
Anyone have thoughts on how viable this is / what the interview process looks like? I went to an M7 and work in PE now as a VP but have found myself really drawn to the operating and strategy side of the business. I could probably find a role at a portco but I think consulting makes more sense as an interim (maybe final, if I like it enough) step. Is it as simple as applying as an experience hire online and hoping for an interview? I’m sure I could get a referral from a b school classmate as well but not sure how much that actually helps. What level should I target coming in at — same as a first-year out of school or potentially higher?
I left for MBB after a year in IB post-MBA. Application process is pretty straightforward; just apply online for the generalist role. They typically don't separate experienced hires out into a separate form and you'll just note it in your application.
Referral is a must have given the high volume of applicants. Just use a classmate of yours you know decently well across the firms. You'll stand a good shot at at least getting an interview given your school level and background.
You'll join as if you just came from your MBA regardless of how long you've worked post-MBA (unless you have consulting experience). Your base pay and bonus will be adjusted higher though than if you came right from school.
To practice casing, leverage your school's case books and the firms' example cases online as well as do mocks with your classmates at the firms.
How have you liked it so far? How has your pay progression been?
Definitely viable and interview process would be the same or similar as OCR. A referral helps you get noticed, but isn't make or break. If you have friends from b school, you could always try to get a call with a recruiter before dropping your resume ("what role should I apply for?"), just for the name recognition.
You'd likely enter at the post-MBA level. You could try to go directly into the manager-level role, but that could be a tough sell, since you're not coming from a consulting firm. Also, the learning/adjustment curve is much easier at an individual contributor level, and you'll easily get promoted once you've established a network.
On a somewhat related note, any thoughts on a Post-MBA lateral into MBB from an industry/corporate role, specifically LDP/FLDP type positions?
