UCLA (Philosophy) or UCI (Business Admin)
Hey everyone,
So I was recently accepted to UCLA (Philosophy) and UCI (Business Admin) as a transfer student and was torn on what I should do. I know IB is probably out of the picture at this point but I was wondering if one school is better than another for consulting.
UCLA obviously has more clout (though WSO hates UCLA) but I’d probably be double majoring in Philosophy and Labor studies or minoring in statistics whereas as at UCI its a solidified Business Admin major (however average it may be). Considering this unique circumstance of the majors and schools, what would y’all suggest and do ya’ll have any insights into the two schools and their placement in consulting. Any advice would be appreciated!
I would probably choose UCLA and try to switch majors into Business Econ, Econ, or STEM. It should take you further than UCI. Not sure that major matters a ton here.
So little update! I actually just got accepted to USC's Business School! Thank you for the comment though, really did help. If you have any insights about USC and Marshall I'd be super pleased to hear em! Thanks
I think it comes down to choosing between USC and UCLA. I think clubs are also important here. Not super knowledgeable about them but have heard the Trojan Investing Society at USC and Investment Banking Workshop at UCLA have good placements so I would try to get into those. I assume both schools are targets for LA and semi-targets for NYC and other offices because of location. If you want SF or Menlo Park, I think Stanford or Berkeley Haas will outplace there and maybe even in LA. I think they're pretty comparable so you should be focusing on cost of attendance, fit, and what you want to study. Marshall is going to be a much more pre-professional experience compared to doing Humanities or Sciences at UCLA. That's not necessarily bad, just different.
go to UCLA name means more than major for a lot of finance jobs. I just graduated with a philosophy major and am going to work at a hedge fund so it’s definitely doable. you might even stand out in business clubs and applications for having an unique background.

philosophy at ucla makes you way more qualified than some random business admin. You just have to sell it
Philosophy is a tough degree. Smart people know it.
