Uphill battle
Ok I realize I face an uphill battle in my quest to break into the Consulting or Investment banking industries. I am currently a University of Houston sophomore who dble majors in finance/economics, this was recently changed from an engineering field that I did not find fulfilling. After this semester my GPA should be at a 3.1 and I am transferring to Texas Tech to get a new slate, I hope to continue the dble major and finish from TT anywhere from 3.8-4.0. Ive always been the lazy, unmotivated kid that could usually pick up things without having to try, causing me to lack effort and drive, grade school was uninteresting. Recently tho, the business world has captivated my interest like none before, My question is what are the chances I get a job at a consulting firm with an undergrad from TT? would I need to work for one or 2 yrs (in some easy entrance industry like insurance) and go for an MBA? if so, what are the chances I get into a top MBA program with aforementioned grades?
My intellect is far superior to my situation, and ive just been reading this site regretting my wasted opportunities, stressing about future prospects, thanks for the help.
p.s. have not started much extracurricular or internships (started late), but plan to catch up on all that once I transition to TT, looking towards a solid junior year internship.
u need to network... ALOT... because an Ivy Leaguer with a 3.5 can apply online without networking and get the 1st interview, and since once you get the interview it's all bout the interview and they no longer look @ grades, your only chance to beat the Ivy Leaguer is preparing for the interview. But given your grades, you're not gonna have even a phone interview.
Network starting with alums, and then if each alum can recommend 3 people to talk to, you'll start expanding your network base. This might be your best bet.

Honestly man I would have stayed at UofH. Coming from Texas, your shots would be working in either Houston or Dallas and most of the finance/consulting firms look at UT, Rice, A&M, SMU, possibly in that order. TT business school is not known for anything and Lubbock is generally a crappy city to live in. At least at UofH you have the downtown Houston area to network with, but in Lubbock there is nothing. Not to bash on them, but the academic rigor of the school is analogous to that of an average public middle school.
Sorry that might have sounded negative but those are the facts. The best thing you can do is network your butt off and get some solid EC's and possibly an internship or two. Best of luck to you!
