Corporate/Tech Strategy Career Path, Post MBA?
Hey folks, I bolded sections, so you can skip past stuff you don't wanna read. I'm really just typing out half this shit for my benefit. Skip to the actual GD question if you hate reading about random strangers lives. / Background - Engineer turned MBA, chose regional 25-35 ranked tier III MBA for love (and scholly $$s), over higher ranked Top 15 MBAs with no cash and no girl. Don't regret it, still have plenty of interesting job opportunities. I'm not in it for the money, I'm in it because I want to be challenged in my work (not just a bullshit interview answer); I tend to lose interest in low-pressure/low-learning roles. I also don't want to work 90 hours a week and think about what life I might be missing. I don't have c-suite or retire by 40 aspirations, but I wouldn't complain if I hit it big accidentally. I'd be happy in a 300-400K house, building up nest egg for retirement and kids college, drive a truck, etc.
I'm not the kinda guy who will sacrifice 5 years post-MBA to make Senior Manager at a Vault Top 10 , to exit into a VP role. I'd rather enjoy 12 years of my actual life, and work my way up the slow-ass way. I'm confident in my networking abilities, both internally and externally, should I get stuck in a bureaucratic glut.
I could definitely see myself staying in strategy the remainder of my career (I'd probably skip between tech firms, depending on who is having the most fun/working on the cutting edge). But I also have an entrepreneurial bug. So I could also see myself joining a risky-AF start-up at any point in time, if the right opportunity comes along.
The Offer I am currently mulling over a Tech Strategy Role at a F50. What might a typical career path look like? Strategy plays to my strengths, much more so than FP&A and even Corp Development. In an ideal world, I'd love to eventually work in an internal incubator or external incubator. I turned down a Big4 role in asset valuations; it just felt boring.
The actual GD question So really, what I'm curious about is: What are some possible career paths/career outlooks for engineering project management to MBA to F50Tech Strategy? Any thoughts, intuitions, or insults are welcome.
REPEMBA, pure crickets, that's where I come in. Any of these useful?
Calling relevant professionals! @cl1052" Jalmojet @wdbrady92"
You're welcome.
What do you mean by "tech strategy"? Corporate strategy for a tech firm? Sorry to tell you this, but pretty much all F500 firms look for tier 1 MBAs with consulting experience for those roles.
Yes. The offer is corporate strategy for a f50 tech company (think IBM, Cisco, Intel not Apple or Facebook) . So I guess it's not just former IB at tier 1 mbas
Congratulations on the offer. I actually work in corporate strategy at one of the three firms you mentioned, and we only interview candidates from tier 1 MBAs with consulting backgrounds. But good on you for getting through the process.
The best way to understand your potential career path is to ask the people on your team where people have gone off to. Over here I have seen coworkers lateral into various business units whom we have worked on projects for in the past, leave the company for smaller, faster growing tech companies, and even found startups. The role will give you visibility across the enterprise unlike most other roles, and where you go is mostly up to you.
Hey thanks! It was an odd process. I nailed the interview of a different role and my resume ended up in front of a strategy VP who then bypassed their normal process and he then interviewed me and I got the offer!
Good information on the process. Do you enjoy your work? Any advice to help me convert this internship to full time?

Just sent you a DM
I’m also interested in this answer. I’m in a very similar position going from engineering to a top 30 mba and looking to get into corporate development/strategy. I may also send a PM.
