How to Break into Content Acquisition?

Think being at Netflix and deciding which content to acquire (Seinfeld, Friends, Dark Knight Trilogy etc etc).

I know large Media corporations have these roles, but it's less well-known and I'm lost as to the best route for breaking in. 

Would traditional finance even be the best route? Perhaps Data Science, or a licensing background may be better? 

Also, if any of you know what total compensation ranges look like through the career that would be super helpful too.
