Bain Cap Credit & Special Sits Comp / WLB
Does anyone have datapoints for Bain Capital Credit and Special Situations teams on how the Associate & VP comp is, and how the WLB trends? Know there is some older info but that seems a bit dated.

WLB is totally team dependent. Hours can be pretty brutal in some cases.
Base cash comp for ASO 1 is between $110k and $130k in BO and NY, $200k for VP1. Bonus 100% as usual.
As Ass1 you make less than an An1 in banking?
Associate 1 base is $150k
The comp listed here is completely inaccurate. Base for first year analysts right out of undergrad is 110K….
What is the WLB in the Special Sits team like in particular?
And yeah, agreed on comp. LinkedIn post for credit has a 150-155 base for ASO so I can’t imagine special sits is lower. Is there a guide for bonus targets for them?
Which teams/groups have the best WLB/culture, and which ones have the worst?
I’ve heard that Special Sits has the worst WLB, which makes sense. Pretty comparable to normal LBO PE. The best WLB group is Private Credit. The Industry groups fall somewhere in between but it varies group by group. Source: friend from college is there right now
Is comp (including bonus) at the junior level (Analyst, Associate) the same for everyone regardless of group/team?
I figured it wouldn’t be as bad as PE bc they’re doing growth and structured equity stuff. Is it busy across all levels or just his?
Special sits does just as much work as NAPE does for it’s deals, but on a less condensed timeline given the processes are usually less structured. So WLB is closer to PE than it is the rest of credit.
Comp is programmatic for analysts/associates throughout of all business units of BainCap, but underperformers can receive lower bonuses. Starts to get different at VP+ due to carry and discretionary bonuses.
Appreciate the insight. Would you have a gauge on the expected hours a week / weekend work? Know Bain is known for good WLB overall so trying to gauge what that means
I’m not in the group myself so I can’t say for certain, but would expect 50-70 a week with occasional weekend work, with high variance depending on whether you are in a deal sprint or not.
Out of curiousity, do you have an offer?
I would also encourage you not to conflate good WLB with good hours. BainCap is known for getting very deep in their diligence, so hours will be long no matter what, but it’s the culture of understanding that people have lives and work isn’t always the #1 priority that makes the WLB good.
Got it - that's very helpful. No, don't have an offer yet but looking to lateral to the team so trying to understand the WLB / hours / comp dynamic. I'm very interested in their strategy from what I've read so far, just trying to get info on the other stuff that isn't as widely available. Also a bit tough connecting w people via LinkedIn since they usually don't have special sits listed in description haha.
Any chance you have info on their returns on the last fund? Know the 2016 DSS fund did well with 2013 lagging.

Think all of credit & special sits gets paid the same at AS1. $330 ($155 base + $175 bonus) + $30 signing and then $300 co-invest. Source: old roommate works there.
Any idea what VP comp is like?

What exit opps are available to Credit analysts versus those for Special Sits analysts?
Curious
Idk why you’re focused on exit opps when you’re in the exit opp? Where else would you go if you are in credit.
Not the commenter, but credit/distressed hedge funds, credit AM, more distressed specific firms, PE, PC etc. are all viable exit opps from a seat like this that the commenter might be trying to gauge
Does anyone have insights on the comp progression for special sits vs PE?
