Commercial Banking -> Private Credit??

What’s a typical route to PC look like? Just finished my Analyst stint and was interested in what this looks like/if CB background & skills translate to what PC shops are looking for. Any and all advice/comments are much appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Commercial Banking (CB) to Private Credit (PC) is feasible, but it requires strategic positioning and leveraging your skills effectively. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Skill Translation:

    • CB provides a solid foundation in credit analysis, risk assessment, and relationship management, which are valuable in PC.
    • If you've worked on underwriting, portfolio management, or structuring deals, these experiences align well with what PC shops value.
  2. Typical Route:

    • Many professionals move from CB to PC by first gaining experience in roles like leveraged finance (LevFin) or corporate banking, as these roles often involve exposure to more complex credit structures and sponsor-backed deals.
    • Another common path is networking directly with PC firms and highlighting your credit expertise and deal experience.
  3. What PC Shops Look For:

    • Strong analytical skills, particularly in evaluating credit risk and structuring debt.
    • Experience with sponsor-backed transactions or middle-market lending is a plus.
    • A demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and contribute to deal origination.
  4. Next Steps:

    • If your CB experience includes exposure to leveraged loans or private equity-backed companies, emphasize this in your applications.
    • Consider lateral moves within your current bank to roles like LevFin or corporate banking to build relevant experience.
    • Network with professionals in PC and explore opportunities at firms that value CB backgrounds.

This transition is achievable, but positioning yourself as a candidate with relevant deal experience and a strong understanding of credit markets will be key.
