Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a Leveraged Finance Credit Risk Analyst/Associate role to Private Credit/Direct Lending is definitely possible, but it requires strategic positioning. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Skillset Alignment: Credit risk roles often involve analyzing creditworthiness, structuring deals, and understanding leverage, which are directly applicable to private credit/direct lending. Highlight these transferable skills during recruitment.

  2. Networking: Private credit and direct lending roles are competitive. Networking with professionals in the space, attending industry events, and leveraging alumni connections can significantly improve your chances.

  3. Recruitment Process: The recruitment process for private credit/direct lending often involves technical interviews, including case studies and modeling exercises. Be prepared to demonstrate your ability to assess debt capacity, structure deals, and justify your assumptions.

  4. Challenges: One potential challenge is the perception that credit risk roles are more risk-averse compared to the risk-taking mindset required in private credit. Be ready to articulate your ability to adapt and thrive in a buy-side environment.

  5. Preparation: Familiarize yourself with private credit-specific concepts, such as direct lending structures, covenant analysis, and market trends. Resources like the WSO Private Credit Prep guide can be invaluable.

If you're serious about making the move, focus on building a strong narrative around your experience and how it aligns with the demands of private credit/direct lending. Good luck!

From what I have seen, this is very much dependent on the bank you are coming from. If you are at a bank that leads a lot (the usual suspects, so JPM/Citi/BofA) you will likely have had reps in the actual structuring (I.e. negotiating points in the credit agreement), which counts for a lot when trying to jump to a PC role. Much harder make the jump if you’re at a bank participates in a passive role.
