Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the Debt Advisory and Credit job market in London:

Job Market Overview:

  1. Debt Advisory: London has a strong presence of advisory firms, including bulge brackets, elite boutiques (e.g., Rothschild, Lazard), and mid-market players. Transitioning from a CB background with leveraged transactions and HY experience positions you well for roles in this space.
  2. Private Credit (PC): The private credit market in London is robust, with opportunities in direct lending, structured credit, and high-yield strategies. Your leveraged finance experience aligns well with the skill set sought by private credit funds.
  3. Direct Lending (DL): Direct lending is a growing area in London, with many funds focusing on mid-market and large-cap transactions. Your background in HY and leveraged deals could be a strong fit here.

Top Recruiters:

For credit-related roles in London, the following headhunters are frequently mentioned as key players: - PER: Known for strong coverage across private credit and special situations. - Blackbrook: Works with several private credit funds. - Wood Street/Myrico: Occasionally seen in fixed income mandates. - Circle Square, Alan Mitchell, Arkesden, Walker Hamill, Dartmouth, One Search, Michael Page: These firms are also recommended for front-office roles, including debt advisory and credit.

Firms to Target:

  1. Debt Advisory: Look at elite boutiques like Rothschild, Lazard, and mid-market firms with strong advisory practices.
  2. Private Credit/Direct Lending: Target funds with a flexible mandate or those focusing on HY/stressed/distressed opportunities. Examples include large private credit funds managing $6Bn+ in AUM or those with a focus on event-driven strategies.

Additional Tips:

  • Leverage your CB background and highlight your deal experience in leveraged transactions and HY.
  • Network with headhunters and professionals in the London market to gain insights and referrals.
  • Consider off-cycle opportunities, as these are common in London for candidates with prior experience.

This should give you a solid starting point for navigating the London job market in Debt Advisory and Credit.

Would hit all of the advisory only banks - Moelis, Laz, Roths, HL, Evercore etc. I think only CVP doesn't do debt advisory.

Think also about whether you have any RE or Infra experience, some of the above have dedicated teams just to RE Debt or Infra Debt Advisory.

Might be easier to go to a bank first in London and then to the buyside rather than direct into the buyside unless you have particular relationships with some of the PC / DL shops in London.

Thanks, that’s really helpful. How is the London finance job market at the moment? I’m conscious that I’d be trying to translate my CB experience into a different market and move into a more advisory-focused role, so I’m curious how challenging that would be in the current hiring market
