PC - Portfolio Mgt Career Trajectory??

1YR Associate at a private credit fund (+$35B AUM) in NYC, started at after undergrad, currently doing portfolio management at the shop. Does anyone know if people in PM will level up and eventually get into origination? Or do originators normally only come from underwriting backgrounds and a senior PM will then go into more of a strategy role as they rank up?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about career trajectories in portfolio management (PM) and origination:

  1. Transition from PM to Origination:

    • It's possible for individuals in PM roles to transition into origination. Some of the best originators have spent 5-7 years in credit Analyst/Associate/Officer paths or in PM/deal structuring roles. Their deep understanding of what deals can be realistically executed in the current credit climate gives them an edge in focusing on high-likelihood success deals.
  2. Career Advancement in PM:

    • Advancement in PM can be slower compared to origination. This is partly because people tend to stay longer in PM roles, and the perception that years of experience equate to better performance can slow down high performers.
    • Base salaries in PM roles are comparable to those in origination, but bonuses are generally lower. For senior high performers (VP+), bonuses are around 50-60% of the salary, while average performers might see bonuses in the 30-40% range.
  3. Origination Backgrounds:

    • Originators often come from underwriting backgrounds, but this is not a strict rule. The ability to transition into origination can depend on the individual's skills, networking, and understanding of the market.
  4. Strategy Roles for Senior PMs:

    • As PMs rank up, they might move into more strategic roles. This can involve overseeing larger portfolios, developing investment strategies, or taking on leadership roles within the firm.

In summary, while the path from PM to origination is not the most common, it is feasible, especially for those who have developed a strong understanding of deal structuring and market conditions. Senior PMs may also find opportunities in strategic roles as they advance.
