Sr Associate / VP Comp Expectations
Have a couple introductory calls with some niche specialty finance firms with $5-$10B AUM. Currently a Senior Associate, looking to make the jump to VP. What’s a reasonable range to give if they ask for comp expectations? $400-$500k depending on carry / longer term incentive. Seem reasonable?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your expectation of $400-$500k for a VP role at a niche specialty finance firm with $5-$10B AUM seems reasonable, especially when factoring in carry or long-term incentives. For context:
VP Compensation: VP roles in private equity or similar fields often have base salaries ranging from $150k-$250k, with bonuses typically matching or exceeding the base. This brings total cash compensation to $300k-$500k, depending on the firm and region.
Carry: Carry allocations for VPs can vary widely. For example, at a $1B fund, VPs might see $750k-$1.25M in annualized compensation based on fund performance. For larger funds ($5-$10B AUM), carry participation could significantly boost total compensation.
Senior Associate to VP Transition: Senior Associates often have total compensation in the $250k-$300k range, with carry adding $200k-$400k annually. Moving to VP typically aligns with your stated range, especially at firms with substantial AUM.
Your range aligns well with industry benchmarks, but be prepared to adjust based on the specific firm's structure, region, and expectations.
