Which internship would be more suitable for?
Have a commercial banking internship this summer at BB
Have some time off before it starts where I am doing another internship. I need to choose between an asset management/ sector research internship and one in Loan Syndication and Sales in DCM
My understanding is that the DCM one would be better but also feel like it’s more IB geared ? Any thoughts pls ?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the Loan Syndication and Sales internship in DCM would likely be the better choice if you're aiming for a career in capital markets or investment banking. Here's why:
Relevance to IB and DCM: The DCM internship aligns more closely with the skill set and experience valued in investment banking and capital markets. It involves working with syndication desks, interacting with buyside fixed income PMs, and collaborating with S&T teams, which can provide a broader understanding of the market and valuable networking opportunities.
Career Flexibility: Syndication roles in DCM are considered versatile. Professionals in this area often build strong networks and can transition to other roles on the buyside or sellside, making it a strategic choice for long-term career growth.
Complement to Commercial Banking: Since you already have a commercial banking internship lined up, the DCM experience would diversify your profile and demonstrate a broader range of expertise, which could be advantageous for future roles in IB or capital markets.
While the asset management/sector research internship could also be valuable, it is generally more tailored to careers in asset management or equity research rather than IB or DCM. If your goal is to position yourself for IB or capital markets, the DCM internship would likely provide a stronger foundation.
