2026 ER FT Recruiting

Hi guys, a junior at a non target studying math & econ. This summer I'm interning in investment research at an Asset Manager subsidiary of a BB. I'm very interested in the ER field. What is the recruiting for 2026 full time for buy/sell-side looking like?

What steps should I take? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about 2026 ER full-time recruiting and the steps you should take:

  1. Recruiting Timeline:

    • For buy-side roles (e.g., hedge funds or asset managers), recruiting tends to be more ad hoc and less structured compared to sell-side. Networking is critical, as many positions are filled through referrals or internal recommendations.
    • For sell-side roles, recruiting typically aligns with the post-bonus season (early in the year). Keep an eye on openings around that time and leverage your summer internship experience to position yourself as a strong candidate.
  2. Steps to Take:

    • Leverage Your Internship: Your current internship at an Asset Manager subsidiary of a BB is a great stepping stone. Make sure to build strong relationships, ask for feedback, and express your interest in equity research to your mentors and colleagues.
    • Networking: Networking is essential, especially coming from a non-target school. Attend industry events, reach out to alumni in ER, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Focus on building genuine relationships.
    • Skill Development: Strengthen your financial modeling, valuation, and Excel skills. Consider using resources like WSO’s Financial Modeling Resources or Bootcamps to enhance your technical expertise.
    • Tailor Your Resume: Highlight your internship experience, quantitative skills (from your math & econ background), and any relevant projects or research. Make sure your resume is polished and tailored for ER roles.
    • Prepare for Interviews: Familiarize yourself with common ER interview questions, including stock pitches, valuation techniques, and market trends. WSO’s Investment Banking and Equity Research Interview Prep resources can be invaluable here.
    • Stay Updated: Follow market trends, read equity research reports, and stay informed about the sectors you’re interested in. This will help you stand out during interviews.
  3. Buy-Side vs. Sell-Side:

    • Buy-Side: Focuses on generating actionable investment ideas for portfolio managers. It’s more independent and idea-driven but comes with higher job security risks.
    • Sell-Side: Involves publishing research for clients and has a more structured career path. It’s a great starting point for transitioning to the buy-side later.

By combining your internship experience, networking efforts, and technical preparation, you’ll position yourself well for 2026 ER full-time recruiting. Good luck!
