A warning to you doctors trying to break into ER…
Background (ignore position) - I’m a doctor who left gen surgery residency to join an ER team at a BB bank. The team was great but very large (8+ people). I was the most junior member and unfortunately got cut. Of course this won’t happen to everyone, but I regret making the switch. The grass isn’t greener. Medicine was a safe path and now I’ve been unemployed for 6 months. My parents are pissed and I don’t know what to do. I should’ve stayed in medicine…
Anyone in biotech have advice on next steps?
Cousin did this path and ended up at a Long only fund, if you’re a surgeon and have ER experience you’re definitely the chad of chads, with your discipline I wouldn’t stress a bit lol
Man I’ve been recruiting and it’s been absolutely brutal for the last 6 months
Seriously? Even with your background? That is surprising but I guess the market is horrible right now
Good luck, I know your pain. I'm currently on my third month and I have a solid background and it has been brutal. Landing a ton of interviews but no offers. We need this Fed Pivot

You say you should've stayed in medicine, why not just go back? This country desperately needs doctors.
You can’t “just go back” I didn’t finish residency training. Also when you leave residency no program will take you typically.
Oof, tough planning
Because the job market for residents is controlled by a monopoly called the AAMC, so you can only apply once a year or try to snag a spot after someone quits. Also, after quitting he’ll only probably land in shitty IM or family medicine residency. By shitty, I mean the ranking of the program, not taking any shots at the specialties.
Offering a perspective here (no hate intended), but with ur background/resume, surprised u haven’t gotten an offer. I speculate that you performed poorly on the job and ur team/Analyst has given poor feedback to buyside. Cuz everyone does ref checks and it’s easy to figure out who to go to. Bio is a very small world
I had good reviews man. It wasn’t a performance related lay off. There were two others on my team who got let go too. It was just a fat team. Also, so did a good chunk of junior er associates
A team with 8+? Which team is that? Do you have all your licenses? How long were you there? If not then it may be a tougher sell. My advice is to apply to corporates and consulting firms and try again instead few years.
Okay word. Have you tried pharma (commercial/strategy, med affairs, comp intel, MSL) or consulting?
Why would you need to break into ER as a surgeon? Where else would you operate on a patient besides the emergency room? Just walk in like any other civilized medical professional.
You don’t operate on patients in the ER… not even a good joke if it doesn’t make sense
I can see why you originally went into the profession of saving lives. Clearly when people are around you at a party they must want to off themselves
