Being an analyst on the news
Curious how an analyst gets invited onto major news networks. Do you have to make connections with the networks or make a bold call to get your foot in the door? How does this work?
Anyone have experience with this?

Career Resources
Never been on myself but from what I’ve seen, working for a BB bank helps a lot. Once you go on once, if it goes well you could be asked back.
Also not to be cynical but being good looking also helps.
Some experience w/ this. Take CNBC for example- their producer and/or host (such as Frank Holland/whoever) will reach out to the Analyst on a recent report. Usually ask for a quick screening call then will send over a zoom link with a day/time that works. Sometimes this is the day of (if timely), or sometimes it's a few days out. just my experience.
Anybody know why some analysts go on these news channels, while others never get on the news? Is it just for marketing or something else?
Usually it's no big deal. They just had the time for an interview, or in some cases, were just being publicity whores. ER analysts know this and take it with a grain of salt
Might help for clout for sell side tho i guess
There are a select few analysts who have specific training and are allowed to do TV interviews. It's not permitted for everyone.
I wouldn't think its hard to get a 3 minute interview slot on TV. I have seen some no-name analysts from these tiny firms with like 20 employees on air.
Just curious, will the questions be sent to them ahead of time? Or are all the answers thought of on the spot? If so, these analyst must have amazing public speaking/presentation skills
I don't think questions are sent ahead of time. I have seen some analysts (especially crypto/fintech analysts) absolutely break down when the interview starts pounding on their buy ratings
exhibit A
holy shit they pulled out the receipts with his previous ratings LMAO
My analyst gets quite a bit of TV exposure and he told me that they usually will give him a general topic but no specifics. Just have to be good at coming up with reasonable answers on the spot to not look like a fool.
If those jokers from Loop Capital are always on CNBC, how hard do u think it can be?
Plus you always see the analysts from the shitty banks bc it would career homicide to be a publicity at one of these top banks. Think getting on live TV and embarrassing GS/MS/EVR because your analysis is piss poor is gonna slide? Shitty banks have nothing to lose brand name wise but very thing to gain in the slim case they’re right.
It also works fine bc no one outside of finance understands the nuance of quality from bank to bank. Wall Street analyst is Wall Street analyst across the board, so they can’t assess who will have somewhat valid opinions or not.
