Equity research & private investments

Pertaining to equity research or even asset management, I was wondering if people working on this field have the possibility, from a legal point of view, to use the knowledge they gain on the companies they cover to make private investment with their personal wealth ? Intuitively, I would say that because you get sensitive datas it could be a kind of insider trading but perhaps I am wrong.

Otherwise, do you think that equity research or AM jobs can be an asset in term of skills, reflex you gain in your day-to-day to manage your personal capital even if you invest in companies from a different field that the one you cover ?

Hey ShortHedge, I swear if I had a silver banana for every lonely thread I posted too I'd be richer than @compbanker ...

Not allowed to trade on names in your coverage universe. Similarly, have a restricted list of names from the firm. Note that if your account is discretionary, you may be able to own single stock names but again, you’re not calling the shots on the account so it won’t be as if you’re trading positions on stocks you’re covering. Also, given relationships with clients and the information they may disclose on bearish/bullishness behind a position, could see some issues if you trade on the same name given FINRA regulation.
