ER Sales vs. Analyst

Does anyone have advice on if equity sales can be a good place to start a career? If I learn good modelling skills in my own time and do CFA level 1 (company sponsor this even for sales grads) will there be opportunities to lateral to buy side roles that are more technical? Literally any opinions will be greatly accepted. Thanks!
