How do you learn about your companies?

How do you start learning about your companies? it has been suggested to go through annual reports of all the companies and make a note of the most important events! How wise and efficient is this?

Possibly those with experience can say how they learnt about the companies under their coverage!!

  1. Google company website
  2. Look at products/services on website
  3. Think, "does this company look cool?" If yes, continue. If not, google new company
  4. Read investor relations/company filings/company presentations
  5. Read company research (if available)
  6. Call company IR/management with questions
  7. Talk to people who would use the products/services of company about competitors, sales process, product in general, how this company is perceived in the market

There could be a million things on this list like contracts, litigation, management experience...how else would you learn about a company?
