Interview - Why would they tell me how many candidates left?

I have a final interview for an equity research position next week. The interviewer mentioned I was one of 3 remaining after the first 2 rounds as a "by the way" comment.

Why would he tell me this???

To me it is a bad omen - like I am the underdog and probably won't get it so he is making me feel better. I dunno, never heard of that before. Thoughts?

Wouldn't give it any thought honestly. Doesn't sound like he was trying to imply that you would or would not get it. Seems like just a courtesy that he told you. Not like it'll change the way you prepare for the interview anyway. Best not to think about such ambiguous things - you have bigger fish to fry.

He's being up front and honest with you which should probably be a good thing to you. Did you really expect them to interview just one person for the position?

In all likelihood it doesn't mean anything except that you're one of three candidates remaining for a position that they probably received literally hundreds or thousands of applications for if the job was posted online. Take it as a compliment and kick ass in your final round. All you can control is how well you interview -- block out the noise, get the job and then go home and fuck the prom queen.
