Moving Forward in Finance
Hi WSO,
I’m currently in a role where I manage and trade a large number of 401(k)/retirement accounts, ensuring that my firm maintains active links to these accounts. We handle tens of thousands of them. I’m a recent graduate and while I appreciate my job, my real passion lies in Equity Research or moving into Investment Banking (IB), Private Equity (PE), or any role that involves heavy analysis and research.
I’m not entirely sure how to best transition into these areas. During college, I was actively involved in relevant extracurriculars, completed two solid internships, and worked as a part-time data analyst for my university (non-target state school) during my senior year. Currently, I’m at a reputable firm, which is great. I also have strong computer skills, especially in Python, and I’ve completed relevant projects that back this up. My GPA was decent (3.4), though I didn’t focus as hard in my early years. I liked partying too much lol.
In addition to my job, I’m constantly engaged with the market, staying up-to-date on macroeconomic, geopolitical, and stock events. I manage my own portfolio and conduct extensive stock research in my free time. My current plan is to pursue the CFA, aiming to pass Level 2, and then look for a new job. I’m already studying for Level 1, dedicating over 300 hours to preparation.
After completing the CFA, I’m considering applying to a target school for a master’s in finance, economics, or statistics, aiming to complement my CFA with a strong GMAT score. This is my tentative plan, but I’m seeking advice on whether this is the best path or if there are alternative steps I should consider. My rationale is that obtaining the CFA would not only enhance my finance credentials but also make me a more competitive candidate for a top MBA program. Ultimately, I aim to work at a respected Equity Research firm like JPMorgan, though I’m open to other opportunities that offer good pay and allow me to do the work I enjoy. I’d appreciate any thoughts or insights.
