Recent Graduate Looking to Work in Equity Research

Hey everyone,

I'm a recent grad from a non target school looking to get into high finance.  I have a Bachelor's from an SEC school with a major in a Supply Chain Management and a Finance minor.  Although I do have previous job history and internships, I have nothing in my background that can relate to finance other than my minor and things I have taught myself over the years through youtube, WSO, reading, etc. Just to top things off, my GPA isn't too hot either (3.2)

Now that thats out of the way if you're still reading maybe you can sympathies with someone like me.  After graduation (May 21) I had a job lined up working in a supply chain role and so far I have hated every second of it.  Always looking over the fence at my finance buddies wanting to be doing what they are doing. Now i'm at the point where I want to make a change and get myself in a position to make a career out of this.  This is the stuff that interests me and this is the field that I want to work in.  Im ready to work hard and know I have the knowledge to make it in a job like this. My only problem will be my non-finance background.

Im looking for ways to get my foot in the door in equity research as a 22 year old right out of college with no previous finance experience.  I understand the price that comes with getting a job like this but am prepared to jump through all the hoops necessary.

I appreciate the time guys.

Start simple. Do not try to do a million things at once.

As of right now, your background shows a lack of credibility. It doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of experience to tell recruiters that you can do the job.

Therefore, your priority should be to put together a strong pitch or two. Really do the work and have it well-polished.

Once that is done, I would suggest networking using that pitch. Ask for some feedback and continually refine it. Get your name out there and use the pitches as a way to showcase that you’re interested and can do enough to deserve a shot.

If you’re not able to translate networking calls into potential interviews, then I would recommend trying to study for the cfa level 1. That will help give your resume some form of stamp of approval.

This would be my approach. Hope this helps

Thanks for the response! Absolutely agree with you and think if it's something I truly want to do, I need to take the according steps to make it happen.  I have been working on a research report to send in along with resumes/cover letters to help the chance of them giving me a second look.  The only problem is i've never done one before so resources found online are my only option for training and guidance.  This is all apart of the process though and I enjoy learning about it.  My only other question is how much more time do I have in order to land an entry level role for something like this? I know all banks have a super structured hiring process and only hire certain times a year, so is it like this for ER as well?  Or can I land a job in ER regardless of the time of year/my age?
